Souad Massi
Souad Massi might be a relative newcomer to the world music scene, but she's already made a huge impact, thanks to her album Raoui. Born in Algeria in 1972, she listened to rock and R%26B as a teen, then began as a singer with a flamenco group, before joining the rock band Akator, before giving up music to work in urban planning (in which she has a degree). Returning to music as a singer/songwriter, backed by her own guitar, she found success, and a new home, after appearing at the Femmes d'Algerie festival in Paris in 1999. Her 2001 WOMEX appearance was a revelation, propelling Raoui (Storyteller) onto plenty of best of lists, and garnering her a nomination in the Radio 3 World Music Awards. With her mix of folk, rock, and traditional Algerian music, Souad Massi is part of the new wave of North African music. Her second album, Deb, has brought even more acclaim. Deb will be released in the U.S. on July 13th by Wrasse Records.
